Buffett declared that he intended to donate more than 80 percent of his fortune to charitable causes. He increased that amount to 99.9 percent in 2020. The principal beneficiary was the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation--created by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his then wife, Melinda--which is focused on global education and health. Bill and Buffett kept a close friendship since the early 1990s. The three Buffett children, as well as the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (named after his wife) were among the organizations that were the recipients of donations. They were concerned with women's reproductive rights, provided college scholarships, and additional charities. In 2010, Buffett as well as Gates Gateses established the Giving Pledge, an invitation for wealthy individuals to contribute the majority of their fortunes to charities.
